Make your Company a Great Place to Work
by Paul Steck
Despite all the disruptions employers face from supply chain to economic swings, recruiting, hiring, training and developing staff still tops the list for many. Why? Because the workforce itself has changed. The burgeoning population of millennials and Gen Z workers are both the current and future workforce. If we are not speaking to them in terms that resonate, appeal and delight them, we are losing our potential staffing base.
The Value of a Diverse Workplace
While not always obvious to the casual observer, diversity in the workplace has been shown to be beneficial to both employers and employees. Diversity is not a new concept. Our company has embraced this practice for many years, and it is experiencing a rebirth in the workplace.

Today’s Manufacturing: Not Your Grandfather’s Widget Factory
Back in the day, manufacturing had the reputation of being a “dirty” industry known for poor working conditions, low pay, lack of opportunity, and overall, low prestige. In short, unless you were the owner, nobody aspired to it as a career choice. It was simply a means to an end—a job that put food on the table and paid the rent. The very face of manufacturing changed dramatically during the 20th century, and in the 21st century the industry morphed into an entirely different category of business.
So, what changed?
Why Would People Want to Work for Your Company?
I have said in previous articles and blog posts that people are your most valuable asset. Without them, you do not have a viable functioning company—no matter how buttoned up your systems are and no matter how great your products, services and technology. People are the intrinsic component to any company’s success. So, any business owner or operator must ask a very important question as they build their infrastructure: “What would make people want to work for my company?” While this may seem elementary, how many of us forget?
Innovative Manufacturing Starts with Creating a Career Development Path
At the core of it, if you want to experience repeat business, you must have a high level of customer satisfaction. If you want to achieve customer satisfaction, you need an engaged, motivated workforce.
As a third-generation manufacturing business, we have the advantage of the long view. One important thing we have learned involves the value of investing in people. Without the right workforce, technology is useless. So, where do you start? We started by hiring outside H.R. professionals because that’s not our area of expertise. What did they tell us?
